I’m an ordinary person who has had to deal with dementia in the family. My grandfather died of Alzheimers. My mother died of Alzheimers. Her brother died of Alzheimers. Her sister’s husband died of it. My brother probably has it. I may be next.
There is a lot of information out there about dementia, and there are support groups (which I recommend). I’m not trying to be an expert on dementia-the disease. I am an expert, however, on being a person who loved someone who had it. As I navigated the uncertain maze of dealing with dementia in the family, what helped me most was talking to people who had been through it. They told me what to expect, which, frightening as it was, somehow made the reality a little less frightening.
This is what I want to offer to you, and why I started this blog. Sadly, dementia and Alzheimers are becoming far too common. Those of us affected by it, either directly or indirectly, need to be able to talk about it. I pray what I have to say helps. At the very least, know that you are not alone. I’m here for you.
….Cindy
